Hallmarking

A hallmark is a series of marks applied to precious metal by a government appointed assay office.  It is a legal requirement and also your guarantee.

All of my sterling silver jewellery over 7.78 grams is hallmarked by The Edinburgh Assay Office along with my own maker's mark.  Sterling silver items below that weight are exempt from hallmarking and will usually carry a 925 mark.
